Attached a link http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/18/arms-trade-israel-attack-gaza to an open letter titled ” The arms trade and Israel’s attack on Gaza” published on Friday, July 18th, 2014 in the British newspaper The Guardian in which sixty-four public figures, including seven Nobel Peace Prize winners and two Israelis, have called for an international arms embargo on Israel for its “war crimes and possible crimes against humanity” in Gaza. In the letter the authors claim that Israel ” has once again unleashed the full force of its military against the captive Palestinian population, particularly in the besieged Gaza Strip, in an inhumane and illegal act of military aggression.” The signatories further state that ” Israel’s ability to launch such devastating attacks with impunity largely stems from the vast international military cooperation and trade that it maintains with complicit governments across the world.” Therefore, according to the signatories, “by importing and exporting arms to Israel and facilitating the development of Israeli military technology, governments are effectively sending a clear message of approval for Israel’s military aggression, including its war crimes and possible crimes against humanity.”
The authors continue to claim that “military trade and joint military-related research relations with Israel embolden Israeli impunity in committing grave violations of international law and facilitate the entrenchment of Israel’s system of occupation, colonization and systematic denial of Palestinian rights” and call on the UN and governments across the world ” to take immediate steps to implement a comprehensive and legally binding military embargo on Israel, similar to that imposed on South Africa during apartheid.”
It is of interest to note that the authors apparently suffer either from denial or a selective writers block because I am trying to find in vain their words of wisdom regarding other events in the Middle East and the world!
For example, they completely ignore that Iran and Syria are supplying missiles to a terror organization to intimidate and kill Israeli citizens, that Iran and Russia are providing an endless supply of offensive weapons to the governments of Syria to brutally suppress and kill its citizen, that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is being funded for years by wealthy donors (i.e. the ruling government elite) in Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia and with their help (and blessing) has killed thousands of Shiite Muslims and is threaten to kill hundreds of Christian Arabs. Oh, I forgot, Russia has supplied a sophisticated surface-to-air missile battery to the pro-Russian “rebels” in the Ukraine to shoot down a civilian airliner killing almost 300 innocent passengers.
To honor those signatories and their sympathizers I suggest a new entry into Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders titled selective reality perception disorder (SRPD). This may at least attempt to describe how (previously) reasonable people can reach unreasonable conclusions.
Yours
Bernd
